8 Things About Koh Tao, Thailand

If you are looking to have a fun time in Thailand, make sure you make a visit to Koh Tao. You will not be disappointed.

  1. Accommodation

As always there are many options depending on your personal budget. I stayed in a beautiful hotel called Living Chilled Koh Tao. It is definitely worth a visit. It is located in an ideal location, with a very short walk from the bars, beach and restaurants. However, there are also many hostels on the island if you prefer the community feel.

  1. The beach

The beach there is incredible. You are able to get a massage on the beach. Listening to the waves as you have a massage is such a calming experience. The massages are well worth the money.

  1. Laundry

As always, when you take your clothes to be washed there is a risk. However, it was only in Koh Tao that all of my white wash was turned blue. But, it happens. Just remember not to take anything expensive with you. That rule applies to backpacking in general.

  1. Rent a bike

Bikes are cheap enough to rent and they are a great way to get around. Some of them require you to give them your passport in return for the bike. It depends on the company. You just have to be careful. Take photos of the bike before you drive off, and make sure you notify the owner of any scratches or marks to avoid being charged for them later. There is so much to see on this island. Ensure that you do not drive on them whilst drunk or hungover – it is not worth it.

  1. Go diving

Koh Tao is a wonderful place to go diving. Many people spend a lot of time out there to get themselves certified as an open water diver, or even as a diving instructor. If this is your thing, or something you would be interested in doing, then make sure you put Koh Tao on your list of places to visit.

  1. Pub crawl

This is the most eventful pub crawl in all of the places I visited in Thailand. It starts in a bar with a bucket, and everyone has the opportunity to mingle. Everybody has their name written on their arm. The next stop is a bar with a pool to jump in to. It does get wild! Then everyone makes their way to another bar to watch a drag show. That is something you have to experience in Thailand. Then everyone makes their way to the final bar that has numerous beer pong tables, which may appeal to your competitive side. Wearing a pub crawl t-shirt is mandatory, and if you return the island with a t-shirt, you will get a free drink for returning to the pub crawl.

There are also photographs taken throughout the night, which are available on their Facebook page.

  1. Food

Just like all over Thailand, the restaurants there are incredible. For a small amount of money you are able to enjoy an amazing meal in a restaurant. There are also many street food stalls available. Street food in Thailand is wonderful, especially the chicken.

  1. Clothes shopping

There are many clothes shops there, but make sure you are able to come up with a fair price for an item. If you are not careful, you could find yourself paying much more. I bought a few beautiful dresses there, which are comfortable to wear in the heat. The dress below cost around £6.
