- Beware of monkey thieves
One morning the door was wide open and there was a packet of football chocolates open with the foil wrappers everywhere. Monkeys had entered the room during the night and raided the room. My advice would be to make sure your door is locked properly!
- Beware of the monkey bite
A monkey bite can give you rabies. Really. When I was in a clinic there was a man rushed in for an emergency jab. He had contracted rabies. My brother and I actually saw the guy again when we were in Rainbow Beach, Australia. He was doing well! Make sure you have your shots before going.
When I say monkeys, I mean Maquac.
- Be prepared to walk
The island is not transport friendly, but that just gives you an excuse to walk around the maze of streets. Just make sure you know how to find your way around, or you could be left confused. Alcohol can disorientate!
- Rent a man with a boat
One of the main attractions to see whilst on Koh Phi Phi is to go to Koh Phi Phi Leh to Maya Bay, which is the beach from The Beach. It is definitely worth a visit. But, be warned, to get to see the beauty of the beach, you have to jump into the water with flippers and goggles on, swim to a giant net rope ladder and climb up. The beauty of this type of excursion is that you will be taken to see different parts that a larger boat does not have access to.
- Motion sickness tablets
You get on a boat to get to Koh Phi Phi, you use boats to see various views, and there are booze boat trips. If you get motion sickness, then I suggest you keep a pack handy. Take one the night before, and another one hour before, then take as suggested on the packet.
- Be careful of massage parlours
The rest of what I saw of Thailand had made me believe that the massage parlour rumour was just that, a rumour. However, Koh Phi Phi was the only place I went into a suspicious one on the main strip.
- Make friends through beer pong
It is a great way to get to know people in a social situation by joining a team, and having fun. You will find that you end up talking about all kinds and making friends with people from all over the world. My brother has mad beer pong skills, so it made everyone want us on their team.
- Bumping into people
You will find that you will bump into people that you have met on other islands. People often naturally follow the same paths, without even knowing it. You can meet people in the most random of places.
- Clinics are expensive
Unfortunately, I had to make a visit to the clinic for a few IVs. Insurance is important to have, but you have to pay the cost upfront and then claim it back. The clinic in Koh Phi Phi was wonderful, and I received such wonderful treatment from all of the staff there.
- It is a cat island
For all cat lovers out there, this island is different to other parts of Thailand. My brother and I were walking back in the dark one night, when he called, “Here kitties,” and all of a sudden ten cats came running towards him. It was one of the most surreal and funny moments. Official cat man.
Have fun, stay safe, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
